Renewable Energy Day 2025: progress worldwide, in Europe and Germany
Marc Pion

On April 26, 2025, we will be celebrating Renewable Energy Day - an occasion to reflect on the significant progress made in the expansion of renewable energies worldwide, in Europe and in Germany. Renewable energies are not only a key to combating climate change, but also an engine for economic development and energy security.
Global developments
In 2024, the expansion of renewable energies reached a record level worldwide. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), 585 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity was installed worldwide, which corresponds to 92.5% of total capacity growth. This brought the total global capacity to 4,448 GW.
China played a leading role in this growth, contributing almost 64% of new capacity with 374 GW, mainly from solar energy. The USA also recorded a significant increase, particularly in the area of solar energy.
Renewable energies covered more than 40% of global electricity demand for the first time in 2024.
Progress in Europe
The European Union has increased its share of renewable energies in the electricity mix to 47%. It is particularly noteworthy that solar energy has overtaken coal for the first time with a share of 11%.
The decline in coal-fired power generation and the continuous expansion of wind and solar energy demonstrate Europe's commitment to a clean energy future.
Germany's energy transition
Germany recorded a renewable share of 59.4% of electricity generation in 2024. Particularly noteworthy is the Weesow-Willmersdorf solar park in Brandenburg, which is the largest solar power plant in Germany with an output of 187 MW and produces around 129,000 MWh of electricity per year.
On January 1, 2025, Germany generated 125% of its electricity requirements from renewable sources at times due to strong winds and solar radiation.
The future lies in a world without fossil fuels. The key question is how to shape the energy transition in such a way that it is economically viable, socially just and safe.

Advantages of renewable energies compared to fossil fuels
- Climate protection: Renewable energies reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to meeting climate targets.
- Economic opportunity: They create jobs and promote technological innovation.
- Energy independence: Local energy sources reduce dependence on energy imports.
- Health and environment: Clean energy sources improve air quality and protect ecosystems.
Renewable Energy Day 2025 clearly shows that the global transition to sustainable energy sources is in full swing. It is up to all of us to consistently continue on this path - for our environment, our economy and future generations.
