PAUL Tech featured in the new “Data Streaming Guide” from Confluent
Marc Pion

At PAUL, we rely on smart technologies and data-based intelligence - and are very proud to be featured as a practical example in Confluent's new “Data Streaming Guide”. Our use case in the “Data Streaming Guide” makes it clear that digitalization and data-driven intelligence are key levers for making the heating transition in existing buildings efficient and socially acceptable. Without invasive construction measures, it is possible to achieve significant energy savings and at the same time make an important contribution to climate protection.
Technological approach: AI-supported energy management with data streaming
PAUL combines artificial intelligence (AI) with state-of-the-art data streaming technology. The basis for this is our adaptive system for hydraulic balancing in heating systems, “PAUL Performance”. AI models continuously analyze system status data, take into account consumption patterns, vacancy rates, weather data, the position of the sun and seasonal fluctuations, and incorporate billions of data points from other buildings.
The technical setup: IoT sensors record relevant data on site and transfer it to the Confluent Cloud via the MQTT protocol. There, the data streams are organized in such a way that the chronological order is preserved - an essential prerequisite for precise analyses and predictions. The AI-based stream processing applications then calculate the optimum settings for valves and pumps in real time and send these control commands back to the building infrastructure.

Added business value and social impact
PAUL Tech achieves considerable benefits through this intelligent system architecture:
- Up to 40% energy savings: real-time data and machine learning significantly optimize energy use and sustainably reduce consumption.
- Improved ESG balance sheet: Reducing emissions contributes to meeting ESG criteria, strengthens positioning as a sustainable company and facilitates access to responsible financing.
- Reduced operating costs: Less energy consumption means lower operating expenses - a clear economic advantage for real estate operators.
- Future-proof: The data-driven optimization of the heating infrastructure prepares buildings flexibly for future energy systems and alternative heating solutions such as PAUL Net Zero with heat pumps and photovoltaics.
The ultimate guide to data streaming
The “Data Streaming Guide” explains in detail how companies use data streaming, how data streaming can be scaled effectively and presents a variety of industry-specific use cases and strategies in this context.
